Many people who live in coastal areas of third world countries like Africa, India and SriLanka have almost unique as a source of protein just the shark meat. This is due to excessive pressure on other species by commercial fisheries. Unfortunately, as pointed out by several international organizations such as WildAid, over the last decade the number of sharks has declined dramatically, resulting in either no longer sufficient for the subsistence needs of these areas. The decline in the number of sharks, in most cases, be attributed to the activity carried by large vessels from other parts of the world who work on commission and indiscriminately, often in violation of local regulations governing the fishery.
